Rabbi, can you please clarify what you meant by the comments “All that has been said about the scandal emanating out of Brooklyn and Deal, N.J. is true.” and “Everyone seems to be scratching their heads about why scandals like these are occurring with such regularity in our community, given how ostensibly learned and religious the main players are.”

Interesting perspective. I am not in favor of the insularity that creates intolerance or even a sense of entitlement. We must teach our children and ourselves that all people are equal (in the eyes of G-d and the law.) At least that is the ideal. Adherence to law must also be a primary principle, unless that law is in conflict with higher law. I think that blaming our separateness is a rationalization. Immoral and illegal behaviors are simply wrong.

Maybe it is not about insularity (there is plenty to avoid in outside culture) but about teaching ikar and not tafel, about teaching ethical behavior as part of religious education, and about teaching the ethics not as what we might think they should be based on the value system of the society around us but based on out own thousands year old Divine system.
